Moscow, 28 March, 2016 – International consultancy JLL has completed the BREEAM certification for two buildings owned by international retailer Decathlon in Tver (Moscow region) and Naberezhnye Chelny (Tatarstan). The hypermarkets total 3,390 sq m in Tver and 4,741 sq m in Tatarstan. Both schemes have received ratings of ‘Good’ (48.0% and 48.1% respectively). Decathlon’s building in Tver is the brand's first hypermarket in Russia and CIS to be certified by the world-leading sustainability assessment method.
Decathlon is a global company with headquarters in France that specialises in the design, development, manufacture and sales of sports goods. The company has been expanding globally for about 40 years, and has been in Russia for 10 years. During this time, the brand has opened stores in 20 cities in Russia.
As part of gaining certification, the Tver hypermarket’s lighting is now 30% more efficient, while the Tatarstan hypermarket is 25% more efficient compared to the standard energy performance within the same scheme. Both buildings have on-site bike parking as well as changing rooms and showers. This is helping to encourage healthier lifestyles for Decathlon’s employees as well as a reduction in car usage and harmful CO2 impacts. In addition, JLL has developed a ‘Building User Guide’ detailing each property's systems and the comfort and well-being that each facility provides. The guide is available for customers, as well as employees.
Yuriy Shamshurov, Technical Director of Real Estate, Decathlon, said: “Our company is distinguished by a defined individual approach for each employee to environmental issues, and this reflects our high level of corporate social responsibility. Decathlon’s global programme targets its stores to either be in certified retail properties or encourages the sustainable assessment of premises that it occupies. We believe that sustainability is hugely important, particularly from a development and property perspective, not only in terms of protecting the environment, but also in helping to strengthen our business and brand image. We are delighted that our properties in Russia have received these ratings by BREEAM; it validates the professionalism and innovative corporate culture of Decathlon. We’re going to assess all new Decathlon properties in Russia under the BREEAM certification.”
Ksenia Agapova, Head of Sustainability Services, JLL, Russia & CIS, commented: “Today, only 7% of retail properties out of 2.8 million sq m of commercial real estate total area in Russia have been assessed to international sustainability standards. However, global practice and research shows that certified retail schemes lead not only to a reduction in operational expenses, but also boost customer loyalty and increase the property’s asset value. Decathlon’s example reinforces the case for retail green development. In current market conditions it demonstrates the significant financial benefits that certification can help achieve and it should motivate retail property owners to undertake sustainability assessments for their own schemes.”
